NHS Charges April 2013

On the 1st April 2013 it has been announced that the NHS dental charges will change as follows

 

  • The dental charge payable for a band one course of treatment will increase by 50p from £17.50 to £18.
    This covers an examination, diagnosis (e.g. x-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, and a scale and polish if needed.  Urgent treatment is also charged at this rate.
  • The dental charge for a band 2 course of treatment will increase by £1 from £48 to £49.
    This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth.
  • The charge for a band 3 course of treatment will increase by £5 from £209 to £214.
    This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures or bridges.

Coffee may reduce Oral Cancer

A new study by the American Cancer Society finds a link between drinking coffee and reduced risk of death from oral/pharyngeal (mouth and throat) cancer. People who drank more than 4 cups of caffeinated coffee a day were about half as likely to die from oral/pharyngeal cancer as people who drank coffee only occasionally or not at all. The study was published online December 10, 2012 in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
